As a variationist sociolinguist who studies the interface of language and society, my key aim in teaching is to equip students with the skills needed to observe, analyse and interpret patterns of everyday language use. In 2020-21, I introduced this new multi-disciplinary undergraduate module that involves older adult community members as co-instructors and prepares students for careers in age-friendly communities:
SEL3413: Language and Ageing (module leader)
In the past, I also taught modules on: language & ethnicity, language variation in the British Isles, variationist methodology, discourse analysis, the history of English, intercultural communication. Between 2016-19, I also contributed to the cross-Faculty module AGE2000: Newcastle University Ageing Generations Education.
Research training
In January 2020, I delivered a module on Discourse markers and pragmatic particles in use: variationist approaches at the Netherlands National Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT) winter school in Tilburg, The Netherlands.
Teaching award nominations
Over the years my students have chosen to recognize my teaching with several Newcastle University Teaching Excellence Award nominations:
Outstanding contributions to teaching (nominated 2016-17, 2021-22 & 2023-24)
Outstanding contributions to academic support (nominated 2021-22)
Outstanding contributions to pastoral support (nominated 2015-16)
Research supervisor of the year (shortlisted 2014-15, nominated 2013-14)
Other teaching awards

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
